چکیده
Two hundred years ago the Montgolfier brothers first demonstrated to the world that man-carrying "engines for flying" were possible. Their vehicle, however, did not have "artificiall Wings" but was a balloon filled with hot air. (A Brazilian, Bartolomeu de Gusmao, had flown a small unmanned hot air balloon 74 years earlier.') After successful unmanned demonstrations the first recorded free flight by man took place on 21 November 1783, when Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier, a doctor, and Francois Laurent, Marquis d'Arlandes, undertook a 25 minute flight over Paris in a Montgolfier balloon (in contrast to a Charlier balloon, which is one filled with a gas that is lighter than air and also flew manned in the same year). Since that auspicious beginning man has landed on the moon and sent machines to other planets. Non-powered balloon flight has played a vital part in this amazing advance and still retains a place of its own in modern

Aerodynamic force generation, performance and control of body orientation during gliding in sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps).
Gliding has often been discussed in the literature as a possible precursor to powered flight in vertebrates, but few studies exist on the mechanics of gliding in living animals. In this study I analyzed the 3D kinematics of sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) during short glides in an enclosed space. Short segments of the glide were captured on video, and the positions of marked anatomical landm...
متن کاملAn Approach for Operation Depth Reduction of an Underwater Glider Propelled by Ocean Thermal Energy
The underwater Gliders are a kind of autonomous vehicles that have a special role in ocean surveys which demand continuous monitoring and long endurance. Because of low energy consumption and long endurance, these vehicles are favorite for these missions. Among this, a type of gliders can harvest ocean thermal energy, causing significant endurance increase. These vehicles need at least 680 mete...
متن کاملPerformance Testing of RNR’s SBXC Using a Piccolo Autopilot
There are several performance parameters for gliders that are useful to know. The ones I focused on are generating a sink polar, finding minimum sink speed, finding maximum L/D speed, and creating a speed to fly curve. Modelers using a system such as the Eagletree Glide can optimize their cross country soaring techniques by flying at the appropriate airspeed for the current flight conditions. A...
متن کاملNumerical simulation of hydrodynamic properties of Alex type gliders
Simulation of an underwater glider to investigate the effect of angle of attack on the hydrodynamic coefficients such as lift, drag, and torque. Due to the vital role of these coefficients in designing the controllers of a glider and to obtain an accurate result, this simulation has been studied at a range of operating velocities. The total length of the underwater glider with two wings is 900 ...
متن کاملHow animals glide: from trajectory to morphology
Animals that glide produce aerodynamic forces that enable transit through the air in both arboreal and aquatic environments. The relative ease of gliding compared to flapping flight has led to a large diversity of taxa that have evolved some degree of flight capability. Glide paths are curved, reflecting the changing forces on the animal as it progresses through its aerial trajectory. These cha...
